Boating in Lee County | Boat Ft. Myers | Cape Coral & more

Boat docking is one thing that makes many new boaters nervous. It's a bit like learning to parallel park in a car. It's a right of passage almost to learn to do it correctly. Learning to dock a boat is one of the most important things you will learn about boating and it's simple to learn once you know the basics.
There are different things that can affect how you handle the boat during docking such as weather conditions and other boaters but for now, let's just talk about the basics. Learning to dock will require you to be out on the waters, in your boat- not just reading about it here on my blog but these tips and guidelines can help you to get started.
First, you need to understand that your boat will approach the dock with an angle. Understanding your angle and how you will approach the boat makes it easier for you to aim for a certain spot on the boat and also to bring the boat in as close as you can.
You want to get as much room as you can to get in to the dock without scratching the boat or hitting other boats that may be docked up nearby but also to allow you to get as close as possible. There are a lot of situations in which it will pay off for you to do know how to do this. In addition to the obvious reasons, there are new opportunities such as dockside shops and restaurants that you wouldn't be able to visit if you didn't know how to dock your boat.
Next you need to learn about coasting and using the power turn to guide your boat in where you need to be. You want to use the slowest speed possible which can vary according to the type of boat you have. Then you need to keep up your momentum as you slowly and accurate turn the boat in to where you need to be.
Preparing for boat docking has a lot to do with understanding your boat, the dock, the waterway and how to carefully maneuver your boat for the best benefit. It's one of those things that you will get better at the more you practice it but it's never too early to start learning.

Have your dock lines ready. This will make the process go faster. Espacially if you are by yourself.
